Milcrest Estate Wines rated amongst best in New Zealand -

Milcrest Estate vineyard is located in Hope, Nelson at the foot of the Richmond Ranges and at the tip of New Zealand’s South Island.  High annual sunshine hours, a long ripening season, maritime climate and stony alluvial soils, combine to produce quality premium New Zealand wines from premium varietal grapes.
Millcrest Estate is a boutique family vineyard owned by Terry Milton and Christine Cook, producing 5 stunning, award winning, single vineyard wines, from the Nelson Region.  The artwork featured on the label is one of many paintings designed, painted and exhibited by Christine.
The 2009 Nelson vintage was truly superb. Low crops, a warm summer, but cooler autumn and a very settled harvest period, provided perfect conditions to make concentrated, quality wines across the varieties. It has been dubbed by many winemakers in the region as the vintage of the decade and a great one to launch Milcrest Estate wines.
The 2010 Nelson vintage was even better than the 2009 vintage.  The season began with a uncharacteristic cold snap around flowering that reduced the yields across the varieties by about 25 percent.  Nelson enjoyed a long warm Indian Summer which resulted in exceptional fruit quality.  Fruit was harvested at optimum brix levels without disease and with fruit exhibiting beautiful flavours expressive of their terroir.
The 2011 Nelson vintage was a good vintage.  The season began with an uncharacteristicly warm spell with little rain thorugh flowering, resulting in good fruit set. Crops yields were above average with larger berries than 2010.  Nelson enjoyed a long warm Indian Summer which resulted in very good fruit quality.  Milcrest harvested their fruit just before the on-set of Autumn rains which were persistent and caught a lot of growers out, resulting in a lot of vineyard sites experiencing in increase in botrytis and powdery mildew.  Some very good wines have resulted from the 2011 vintage.
The 2012 Harvest was a good vintage for Milcrest Estate, but a terrible year for Hawke's Bay, Marlborough and many of the other growing regions.  It was a year that saw little sun, heavy rain and cold flowering period which resulted in about 43% yield reduction across New Zealand.
However Milcrest's homeblock was completely the opposite with it's unique micro-climate resulting in a very good flowering period and a crop consistant with 2010 and 2011 in terms of yield and quality.  In fact Milcrest was one of the only vineyards in Nelson to harvest fruit around the same time as usual and with the yield and quality intact.
Pinot noir was affected in Nelson and New Zealand, yielding little fruit in many cases, but what was left on the vines has resulted in fantastic quality concentration and quality wines.  Our 2012 Pinot Noir is looking fantastic.
2013 Harvest:

The 2013 vintage in Nelson was similar in quality to the 2010 vintage.  It was a beautiful long summer with very warm days and cooling night breezes.   The fruit was exceptional across all of the varietals and the wines will be quite exceptional.  Fruit set was fantastic with good yields and very little disease.
This was indeed a stunning vintage.
