MILCREST ESTATE WINES

313.JPGWelcome to Milcrest Estate.

We are a privately owned, New Zealand, boutique, award winning wine producer.  Founded and owned by Terry Milton in 2006.  The homeblock vineyard  is situated at the foot of the Nelson Ranges on the Waimea Plains in the sunny Nelson Region.

The frostfree homeblock was planted in 2006 in sauvignon blanc and Milcrest has additional vineyard sites growing a variety of grape varietals in the Tasman and Upper Moutere areas of Nelson.

Milcrest produces a premium range of 10 wine varietals including; sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, riesling, chardonnay, rose. pinot noir, syrah, montepulciano, merlot and dolcetto.

Milcrest is the only producer of the Italian red varietal Dolcetto in Nelson and one of only a few producers of syrah. Our Milcrest Syrah and Reserve Chardonnay have a big following around New Zealand and you will find them at many restaurants.

Milcrest Esate Wines are sold domestically throughout New Zealand, predominantly On-premise, and Internationally to Australia, China and Thailand.

Locally in Nelson City you will find our wines at the following restaurants: The Boat Shed, Parts and Service, Miracle, Lombardis, Lambrettas, Little India and Pizza Bella and Smugglers Pub and Cafe.

In Tasman you will find them at: Ben and Maxis, Lemongrass, Chai Yo, The Grape Escape, Abbey Road Cafe, Jellyfish, Rimu Wine Bar, Moutere Inn, Smoking Barrel,  Roots Bar (Takaka).

Our wines are premium quality, hand made, single vineyard varietals that express the fantastic terroir of the Nelson Region.

The maritime climate and high sunshine hours allow for warming of the grapes during the day and cooling sea breeses from cloudless skies during the evening and night result in intense fruit flavours and character unique to the region.

MILCREST ESTATE RESERVE CHARDONNAY 2017

Chardonnay_LR.jpg

One of our flagship wines, and this has to be our best Reserve Chardonnay yet,  100% barrel fermented in predominantly French Oak, with a hint of American barriques for 11 months, 60% Malo.  The 2017 vintge was a very good, growing season partiuclarly for chardonnay.  Characters of white peach, butterscotch, with  a long silky creamy finish.  This is going to develop further into a stunning chardonnay. Only 224 cases produced and this wine sells out every year before December.  Drinking great now but will continue to develop over the next 1 - 8 years.

NELSON WINE REGION:

nelson_map.gif

Nelson is situated at the top of New Zealand's South Island and is the sunniest Region, producing the most awarded wines per hectare of grapes grown in the country.

Nelson is on the 41st Parellel and is sheltered on three sides by the Richmond and Western Range, leaving only the South Westerly and North Easterly prevailing winds.  The majority of bad weather gets trapped in the ranges and often has no impact on Nelson itself.

The Nelson Region is split into two sub-regions, The Waimea Plains and the Moutere Clays.

The plains being an ancient alluvial river terrace consisting of Stony Clay Loam soils and the Moutere Clays as the name suggests, rich clay soils.

The two sub-regions produce contrasting styles of wine and combined give the wine maker great blending options in creating something unique to the winery and the site in which the fruit is grown.

With 1180 Growing degree days and around 860mm rain annually, Nelson is able to grow most varietals well, with the exception of some of the Bordeaux styles such as Cabernet Suavignon.

Nelson cool maritime climate arguably produces the best Chardonnay's and aromatics in New Zealand along with fantastic Pinot Noir and Syrah.  The Nelson Region win 38% of all wine accolades each year making them the most successful Region in New Zealand.

SOIL STRUCTURE: MILCREST ESTATE HOMEBLOCK

CIMG1195.JPG

Ranzau stony clay loam (Rz), 4,870 acres, is found on alluvial terraces on the eastern part of the Waimea Plain .  The terraces are about 20 ft above the present flood plain of the Waimea River and are very gently tilted towards the sea coast.  As with Waimea soils, the alluvium on which the soil is formed is probably derived from greywacke, argillite, sandstone, limestone, and ultrabasic rocks.  The underlying gravels are deep and extend below 30 ft on most of the area.

A profile at Hope under native pasture is:

10 in.  dark brownish grey stony clay loam, friable, moderately developed medium nutty structure;

12 in.  dull brown stony silt loam, friable, moderately developed fine blocky structure; on stones and silt.

Irrigation is essential between Late November and the end of March to ensure adequate water supply fo the grapes.

Our vineyards in the  Moutere are clay soils with good water holding capacity.  These vineas are all non-irrigated.
